Microsoft and Adobe Release Security Patches

Posted By Netgear Threat Lab at 4:28 PM, April 30, 2010

After a record tying 13 security patches last month, Microsoft issued another 11 security patches in April, fixing a total of 25 vulnerabilities. Of the 11, 5 were of the "critical" variety, 5 had a level of "important", and 1 was considered "moderate".

The five "critical" patches fixed vulnerabilities existing in SMB client, Media Services, DirectShow, Media Player, and Windows Authenticode Signature Verification.

One patch to keep an eye on is MS10-022. Although it is rated as level "important", there is VBScript code that is using it to spread, so we recommend all users to patch this vulnerability as soon as possible.

The Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for April 2010 can be found here.

Adobe also announced patches for critical vulnerabilities for Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. These security holes exist in Adobe Reader 9.3.1, Adobe Acrobat 9.3.1, Adobe Reader 8.2.1, and Adobe Acrobat 8.2.1.
Attacking these vulnerabilities will cause the user program to collapse and the attacker will gain remote access to the victim's system.

The security update available for Adobe Reader and Acrobat can be found here.

Four Percent of All PCs are Infected with Conficker

Posted By Pete at 5:06 PM, April 9, 2010

Gregg Keizer at Computerworld has reported that 1 in 10 PCs are still unpatched and vulnerable to the worm known as Conficker and that 25 out of every 1000 PCs are infected with the worm. A year ago, we reported Conficker (Kido) spreading like wild fire throughout the Internet.

I think what's alarming is the vast number of PCs that are either unprotected or under protected. Even with the people around me - friends, relatives, I see too many cases where they have no software anti-virus or their anti-virus subscription that came with the PC or laptop had already expired for 3 years! (We've all seen this before). If 4% of all PCs are infected by Conficker alone, I am scared to even imagine the number of PCs infected by the other 10 million threats!

The Internet is not getting safer anytime soon, so be sure to get yourself educated on safe Internet usage practices and get yourself and your loved ones as many layers of malware protection as possible.
