Agfa Graphics is a world leader in prepress solutions for the printing and publishing industries. Agfa Graphics Central Europe covers the Western European market, including Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. Agfa Graphics develops key software that runs computer-to-plate (CTP) technology, which is used in high quality print products such as magazines, print advertisements, newspapers, brochures, and product packaging. While high quality printing previously involved a manual, resource-intensive process to produce the physical plates that were employed in the actual production of the print material, CTP technology makes it possible to automate the process by utilizing a simple software file.

"We’re using the STM150 in conjunction with traditional client-side anti-malware. The combination has dramatically increased the security of our network and has already protected us from some nasty threats. Twice in the past two months, the STM150 has stopped a virus that would have otherwise ripped through our network, costing us time, money, and productivity. So even though we just installed it, the STM150 has already proven its value.”

Background

The presales group of Agfa Graphics Central Europe is a highly mobile group of 12 project leaders spread across the Central European region. These employees routinely visit customers and prospects throughout their assigned territory, delivering custom demonstrations that highlight Agfa Graphics’ capabilities. With up to 40 sets of 8GB, bandwidth-intensive demonstrations that highlight various aspects of the company’s capabilities, each of the project leaders has traditionally carried a large server, weighing nearly 100 pounds, onsite for each customer visit. In addition to the size and weight of the server, each member of the group was also responsible for the administration of his own server, which included keeping it patched and fully protected with up-to-date security software.

Stefan Wundrig, team leader of the presales team, determined that it would be far more efficient to provide each project leader with a local, inexpensive laptop, then host the presentations on virtual servers in the central office where they can be available for on-demand access. Stefan realized that the change would enable the sales force to spend more time selling, rather than administering individual servers.
